Learning Photoshop…

Posted in All Posts on October 25, 2009 by tobias87

So I felt my publication was lacking some texture and that the black and white simplicity wasn’t 100% working, so I thought that I would learn how to make patterns/ textures on photoshop and use them in the background of the title pages.

This is 100% opacity but after playing around, I’ve decided to use 30% opacity.

Follow the Arrows

Me and fellow student Aaron Kitney decided to set up a journey where a ’stranger’ will see the ‘Follow the Strangers’ on the floor and then follow the arrows round the corner to where we left a message on the wall reading ‘Leave me something special’ .

The intention of this experiment was to get strangers to interact with the paper and pens that were left and leave a picture, a gift or anything.

Unfornuately I am a little behind, I SHOULD be close to finishing up the publication but I am just getting stuck into it, with a football game tomorrow and thursday preparing my dissertation, I am realy going pick some time together to piece it together. I would like to say I am enjoying the whole process so far and have a few more cheeky experiments in the pipeline – on with the indesign document.

The Publication…

I have been keeping up with my schedule on my gantt chart and have begun to design the initial pages for my final publication… the size will be 150mm x 150mm. I am realy keen on doing a square format as I have never done it before and have always wanted to. I am planning to use a clean cut style maybe with some light texture in the background just to give it a little something but not too much but not just white… I think it works well. Century Gothic is the typeface, very appropiate me thinks.

After 2 gumtree experiments, I don’t think I will attempt a third as I didn’t get an answer from either adverts.

Whats in the box?

Posted in All Posts on October 18, 2009 by tobias87

So after hearing Jool’s telling me about an idea a first year had of leaving a ball out saying ‘kick me’. I had an idea of my own, I decided to get 5 shoebox sized boxes and write various words on them as you will see below and put them round the Epsom clock tower area…

Very interesting results…

After going out I came up with the issue of what should be inside as my friends were asking me, originaly it was going to be nothing but then I felt something should be…

The Results…

Within 10 minutes of leaving the box, the police arrived, I hid away in the entrance of Marks and Spencers.

Then within 2 minutes, the box had been picked up.

When I was watching this I found it quite interesting to see how naive children are especially after seeing all the ‘adults’ read it but not dare to touch it or even move it… they would stand around it and look where as this little lad immediately looked and picked it up.

Another gumtree advert…

I remember from the 3 day brief that other members of the class were giving the task of phoning strangers, I thought it isn’t plaggerism as it was one of the tasks given and is perfect for me. So I posted the ad below on gumtree and hopefully I’ll get strangers calling me.

Will post after 9pm and let you know the results.

Gumtree Post

Ad title:
Strangers are only people who haven’t met each other yet.

Description:
The reason I chose the ‘missed connection’ category because I believe strangers are missed connections, like my title says ‘Strangers are just people we haven’t connected with yet.’

So basically I would like to invite you (strangers) to call me this evening between the times of 8pm – 9pm to chat… I would like to record the conversations on my blog just as a document of this little experiement not that I am trying to get anything out of it.

So if your bored, intruiged, or just what a chat, give me a call.

We clambered up onto the top of the ashley center tuesday afternoon and using a helium canister which ive been waiting to arrive to do this experiment we blew up the baloons and attatched them one by one to the railing waiting to release them all togather, see the video later.

Messages in Baloons – Preparation

The Setup

The idea randomly came overnight, so me and a friend decided to write on notes, positive messages with contact details on the other side where we put the messages inside baloons and set them off with the hope of being contacted.

Light, where has it gone?

Posted in All Posts on May 6, 2009 by tobias87

Awesome use of light which i think we sometimes overlook, this video should remind us to use it, i had a post around new year of electrobell where they messed around with candles, cool affects.

Maybe in a future project i would like to use light, stop motion can be realy cool, light writing always pleases the eye.

Check out >Licht Faktor< A german crew of light writers, they are awesome!
